I recently acquired a pair of vintage Wharfedale speakers from a friend for
free. They are 2 way vented, 12" woofer and 4" (What I thought was)
mid/tweeter. The cabinets are solid as a rock (they certianly don't build
speakers this way anymore!) The mids/highs seemed to be quite a bit lower
to my ears. I cracked them open and discovered that someone had put a pair
of pioneer 4" coaxial car speakers in there. Now I am not looking to
replace these in any way (they are my "basement speakers"). I took a
multimeter to the speakers. I am getting a 7 ohm reading off the woofer and
5 ohm at the mid/tweeter. They read 12 ohms at the input.

Is there anything I can do to level this difference out?

If you get 5ohms for the mid/hf and 7ohms for the woofer while getting
12ohms at the input terminals, it suggests that these are wired in
series which is generally not appropriate.

Can you determine how these are wired and if there is a crossover
network?

Typically, the tweeter is MUCH more efficient than the woofer and
tweeters usually need padding down to match the woofer.

I think I would consider selling them to a Wharfedale fan (for
proper restoration) and buy a cheap pair for your basement
with the proceeds.
