I bought a Columbia680 stereo today on Craigs list which I assumed was mono
as it had one output transformer and a pair of 6L6's and a mono tuner input
When I tore it down and found the schematic I found that it was in fact
stereo and used a single 6L6 for each channel and they shared an output
transformer .
What looked like a traditional Push Pull design is actually fed with a
channel per 6L6 and in phase .
The output winding is Center tapped and has a speaker attached to each side
of the winding.
Curious whather anyone has ever seen this and could comment on how common it
was
Thanks
Bob

I can get binaries, but I don't see a link.

I really would like to see the print for this contraption.

Thanks for the heads up I did'nt realize that how it worked and will post to
a binaries group ( non Porno) in the future

What's up with this? There's no link; look at the OP's 3rd post here. It
has a JPG of the schematic attached.

Many ISPs (including mine) strip attachments off text only newsgroup
posts. Otherwise their servers would be jammed with HTML files...

Maybe its time the OP posted the cct somewhere we can all see, eg
tinypic. Not everyone has binaries groups access.

Didn't he do that? He also attached it here (naughty, naughty).

not that I saw anywhere.

You can analyse it by assuming the two inputs are tied together; and then
using one only while tying the other one to ground. First one transformer
works, then the other.

Unfortunately analysing a circuit without knowing the circuit is one of
those skills I never did learn.

Okay, I understand how you could be deceived, but you're WRONG, this is
a stereo circuit.

The way it works is:

(1) The SUM of the left and right channels is amplified the usual way,
with the output tubes being driven in push-pull, but CLASS A, so the
average B+ current does not vary. That is important, as we'll see
later on..

(2) The DIFFERENCE is applied to the output tubes IN PHASE. This
signal cancels out in the main output transformer, so it doesnt bleed
into the main output signal, the SUM.

(3) The difference signal, applied to the outut tubes in phase, shows
up as current variations in the output transformer primary. That
signal is picked up by the smaller transformer that is in series with
the center tap.

So we have in effect TWO separate class A amplifiers. The transformers
do the magic of separating the in-phase and out of phase signals.

(4) Then at the secondary of the output transformers, more magic. The
secondaries are hooked up so that the difference signal gets added to
one half, mathematically (L+R) + (L-R ) gives 2L, then in the other
half, (L+R)-(L-R) gives 2R. Voila! Stereo!

Could someone email me the schematic? I'd like to have a look at it.

Try http://rapidshare.com/files/1511254/Stereo.jpg.html

Don't whine about the server.

cant get anything from it. Is it up at specific times only?

No. You have to step through its annoying process but it's only 30
seconds.

Well, I'm getting webpage data now, and went through their bizarre
routine twice, but each time it suddenly decides I want to upload
instea of download, no dlwnload to be found anywhere. What a waste of
time. What kind of bizarre mind created that site.

NT

FWIW, I use that site pretty much on a day to day basis and it's really
not that weird. I just tried logging on using the web address cited in
this message without any problems at all. You do need Javascript turned
on to download files (and the site will automatically tell you if you
don't have it turned on). From the sounds of it, probably you are
clicking on an "upload" hyperlink rather than a download one.

Once the page comes up, mouse click on the "Free"
This will bring up another screen which will include a "validation" box
where you type in the numbers that are required (numbers are in a little
graphic".
Press the "Return" or "Enter" key on your keyboard, or click on the
"Download from" button........depending on how you have your web browser
set up, the file will either start downloading automatically or a pop-up
will ask if you want to "Save to disk" or "View the file".

Hope this helps....... :-)
