few years back I had mulch around my roses, basic woodchips.
they have all broken down and gone away now, and I notice quite a few of my
neighbors are using this red mulch around flowers. I think it is "painted"
mulch, or so I have seen at wal-mart.
any reason NOT to put this around my roses?
just wanted to make sure before I purchase any, did not know what affects
painted mulch might have, didnt see anything about it online.
I know you can get red cedar mulch, but it costs a bit more.

I've used the red colored wood mulches in paths
but not directly in flower beds. I'd want to know
what was added to create the color effect. I've
seen it for sale at various places, not just Wal-Mart.
That doesn't make it safe, of course...
Depending on where you live, you might find a
source of bulk mulch that you can package
yourself and save some money.

that stuff is also available from Scotts if IIRC 4 colors. shouldn't |
harm the plants If I read the label right.

Because it looks unnaturally ugly? Every spring, I lay down some composted
steer manure and whatever shredded bark mulch is on sale that year. It
eventually gets worked into the soil and breaks down, but I'm okay with
that.
If you want artificial mulch that lasts forever and is bad for all kinds of
environmental, aesthetic and health reasons, consider shredded tire rubber
mulch.
