What are cane borers? How are they prevented and how do
you eliminate from roses?

Insect larvae that can kill a cane but generally are
beneficial predators. Lots of info. online, just
google "rose cane borer". E.g.:
http://www.rose-roses.com/problems/badinsects.html
http://www.ext.colostate.edu/ptlk/1463.html

I routinely dab ordinary white (school) glue on
pruning cuts, anything pencil size or larger.
If I notice a hole in a cane, I prune back as far
as needed to get past the hole and put white
glue on the cut.

The white glue probably isn't a good solution
in areas that get a lot of rain. Try something
water insoluble.

You might also want to read up on Integrated
Pest Management (IPM). Since most bugs
and insects found in the garden are beneficial,
and most chemical control measures kill the
good bugs as well as the bad, allowing some
balance in your garden is a better solution IMO
than killing everything in sight. There are also
often organic solutions to problems that don't
poison the environment. If you search on
"organic controls for roses" you'll get a lot
of good articles. E.g.:
http://www.bestgardening.com/bgc/howto/organic.htm

Here's one site with information on IPM,
but there are many available on the Internet:
http://www.gardenweb.com/sesbania/ipm.html
