I am a complete novice and wanted to know if this is worth pursuing. My
Pioneer SD-P5191 when turned on has a horrible hissing type sound and
along with the sound are lines running through the picture. It use to
happen occasionally and now it is constant.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like some type of HV Arc within the set, per your description. You
indicate you do not have experience servicing these products. IMHO it may be
best to have a service company come out and eveluate the set and give you an
estimate of repair, paying for the services rendered.

This can be from a number of areas, especially the high voltage sections. It
is also possible that some circuit in the power supply is oscillating where
it should not be.

This is not a job for the do-it-yourself. In fact, your set can be dangerous
for you to work on, since you do not have the proper training, base studies,
and knowledge. I am also sure you don't have the proper test tools, and
service information in order to even start something constructive with it.

For safety sakes, and to have a chance to get it running again, call in the
service rep for your TV set, and have him do an estimate on it for you. Then
you will be able to make an intelligent decision if it is worth to service
the set or not.
